Evening reflection

Introduction

Today's reading picks up the story from verse 25. John the Baptist is born and Zechariah regains the use of speech. The Holy Spirit allows him to prophesy concerning his son, and he praises God.

Reflection

Just as Elizabeth had been filled with the Holy Spirit when she greeted Mary (Luke 1:41), Zechariah is "filled with the Holy Spirit" (verse 67) after his son's circumcision, and he can now speak again. What caused the “fear” of Zechariah and Elizabeth’s neighbors (verse 65)? Similar to Mary's song of praise (Luke 1:46-55), Zechariah's prophecy speaks of God's faithfulness. What does Zechariah prophesy about his son? What old promises does he remember?

*

Pray

*

God of hope and promise, you remember your sacred covenant and bring upon us the bright dawn of your salvation.

*

You are merciful and full of love. Guide my steps this day on the path of peace.

*

In the name of Jesus, I raise this prayer. Amen.

  Luke 1:57-80

  Luke 1:57

The time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son.

  Luke 1:58

Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had shown mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her.

  Luke 1:59

On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they called him Zechariah, after his father's name.

  Luke 1:60

But his mother spoke and said: No, he will be called John.

  Luke 1:61

They said to him: There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.

  Luke 1:62

And they made signs to his father to know what he wanted to be called.

  Luke 1:63

Zechariah asked for tablets, and he wrote: John is his name. And everyone was astonished.

  Luke 1:64

At that moment his mouth was opened, his tongue loosened, and he spoke, blessing God.

  Luke 1:65

Fear seized all the inhabitants around, and in all the mountains of Judea they talked about all these things.

  Luke 1:66

All those who heard them kept them in their hearts, saying: What will this child be? And the hand of the Lord was with him.

  Luke 1:67

Zechariah, his father, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he prophesied in these words:

  Luke 1:68

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has visited and redeemed his people,

  Luke 1:69

And has raised up for us a mighty Savior in the house of his servant David,

  Luke 1:70

As he announced through the mouths of his holy prophets of old,

  Luke 1:71

A Savior who delivers us from our enemies and from the hand of all those who hate us!

  Luke 1:72

Thus he shows his mercy to our fathers, and remembers his holy covenant,

  Luke 1:73

According to the oath with which he swore to Abraham our father,

  Luke 1:74

To allow us, after we are delivered from the hand of our enemies, to serve him without fear,

  Luke 1:75

By walking before him in holiness and righteousness all the days of our lives.

  Luke 1:76

And you, little child, will be called prophet of the Most High; For you will walk before the face of the Lord, to prepare his ways,

  Luke 1:77

To give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins,

  Luke 1:78

Through the mercies of our God, by which the rising sun has visited us from above,

  Luke 1:79

To enlighten those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, To direct our steps in the path of peace.
